Housing Justice Ballot Canvass Shift

There’s an important local election coming up on November 8th. This election has the power to determine the future of housing in Oakland.

Councilmember Carroll Fife is sponsoring 3 housing justice ballot measures that, if passed, would make a huge impact on the homelessness and housing affordability crisis:

  • Measure V would expand Just Cause eviction protections to prevent Oakland residents from losing their homes
  • Measure Q, would exempt Oakland from Article 34, a racist statewide law that was passed almost a hundred years ago, that bans the construction of low-income, deeply affordable housing unless neighborhoods vote to allow it by a 2/3 vote. Article 34 was intended to keep neighborhoods segregated and prevent Black people from accessing quality housing. Measure Q would get Oakland out from under this racist law and would authorize the construction of up to 13,000 deeply affordable low-income housing units in the City.
  • Measure U is an infrastructure bond that would actually fund building that affordable housing that Measure Q would legalize. Basically, we need Measure Q to make it legal to build affordable housing, and we need Measure U to provide the funds to actually build it.
